Ubuntu Edge: Full Ubuntu OS on my phone, A dream coming to reality.

Now obsolete

If it wasn't for Ubuntu I would never be a regular linux user. From all the linux flavors I tried, it is the most user friendly and there is less fighting the OS and more work getting done. Recently I did notice that other flavors are finally looking out for the user (I'm sure they are following Ubuntu steps). I have been closely following ubuntu phone experience http://www.ubuntu.com/phone it looks very interesting. Today Ubuntu started a campaign on indiegogo with the very ambitious goal of $32 Million for the new Ubuntu Edge: the next generation of personal computing: smartphone and desktop PC in one state-of-the-art device.

Ubuntu is an open source operating system based on Linux. There is a large community contributing but Canonical leads the development.

Ubuntu Edge is to be a new phone that runs the Full Ubuntu OS natively with the capability of also runing android. When docked, It becomes a full fledged Desktop machine. The specs are not completely worked out for the hardware but here are the promises they made:

Ubuntu Edge Specifications
Processor: N/A (Fastest multi-core CPU)
OS Dual boot Ubuntu mobile OS and Android
Memory: 4GB of RAM
Storage: 128GB
Battery: Silicon-anode Li-Ion battery
Screensize: 4.5in 1,280 x 720 HD sapphire crystal display
Camera: 8mp low-light rear camera, 2mp front camera

Although $32 million dollars is very ambitious but this is not a small project. Many kickstarter, and Indiegogo projects make the mistake of treating hardware like a software problem. There are lots of regulations and road blocks when dealing with hardware. But It seems Canonical is taking this in to account so they don't risk running out of funds before having a product to show for.

You can help this project see the light right here. This is the disruption we need in the computing (not just cell phones) industry. One device that unifies all your personal computing needs.
